THE AIRY TALES
SPARKPLUG
Fairy tales were never so philosophical in this deeply engaging book by Olga Volozova.
In this collection of tales and pictures, Sparkplug collects a series of stories that one could easily imagine Michel Gondry attempting to capture on film. There are tales of men made out of ice cream, people living on leaves and copious amounts of crying. The uniting theme? Invisible threads that connect all. You probably don’t even realize it, but as we speak, a bird is dragging you around through a string in the top of your head.
Whimsically, Volozova taps into the human psyche uncannily well and provides dark themes within the otherwise light and humorous tales. All of the tales are incredible, with my personal favorite being the opener: “The Golden Thread”. I will definitely be keeping this book around to read to my kids one day… hopefully they won’t get too creeped out and jump through a window.
The abstract art compliments the innovative word-flow here. It may take a while to get used to, but once you do, the sum of its highly original qualities makes The Airy Tales a choice selection.
